St. James Episcopal Cathedral

St. James Episcopal Cathedral

Chicago, Illinois

One of our most exciting projects for the Service Department is well underway!

The City Temple of London has existed as a congregation since around the year 1640. They have occupied their current home since 1874. Although it was destroyed during The Blitz in 1941, funds were raised for its rebuilding after the War, and it was re-dedicated in 1958. This included the J.W. Walker organ.

The congregation has undertaken a redevelopment project on their historic structure that has alotted them a significantly smaller portion of the building as their home for worship. This has necessitated the removal of the organ. Not wanting to see the organ scrapped, they have given the organ to Saint James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois. In 2023, our crew traveled to London to remove the instrument and pack it for transport to our works in Champaign.

As the organ was located behind screens without a facade, it is being reconfigured for installation behind the exquisite Johnson and Sons case already standing at Saint James. The original console will be built into the case and a second console will be constructed for added flexibility.
